Nowy Jork & Warsaw: The Map

For this project, I was interested in local landmarks named after a location or person of Polish or American origin present in both Warsaw and New York. I have spent roughly half my life in each city, and was interested in drawing connections between them based on history and language. For this, I scoured street atlases of New York and Warsaw for urban elements named after the same person or geographical place. The maps were combined to create a new, fictitious city that has the sister streets sitting on the same quadrant of the new map. The panels on the far left highlight the sections of the original street atlases used in the new fictitious city, and provide a sense of scale. When folded in half, corresponding panels on the opposite side highlight the street pairs for each section, and each is accompanied by a short entry on the two streets' namesake.
